Things I Don't Get

Image
1. Common popular vernacular, such as "I know, right!?" Grammatically, this sentence is a nightmare. It even feels like a train wreck when I say it. I make fun of my kid when he says it - he thinks I'm a dork. 2. Why my 13 year old doesn't want to be in the same part of the house with me all day until after 8pm. This also happens to be the time when I am trying to catch up with things on the computer, pay bills, give myself a long overdue pedicure, think in a straight line, etc. 3. The fact that the earlier I have to get up and the more I have to do the next day, the less I can sleep that night. I have to pee 12 times, and of course, check the clock each time. That would also be the night one of my children is walking in their sleep (see #9). 4. Most of popular mainstream music. Seriously, I must be 80 years old, I think the lyrics are socially bankrupt and the musicians never put any thought into what they are doing to those poor drum kits. Somebod...

Cold Running

I was so excited to get back in the running groove. I am in the process of formulating my training plan for the next few months. I'm using a hybrid of Hal Higdon's and the calculator on Runners World, adjusting the days to my schedule. Looks like Tuesday will be "long run" day as long as David's days off are Tuesday and Wednesday. Can't decide if I want a "just finish" goal for the Half, or some sort of time goal. Haven't trained for a serious distance for a couple of years. Yesterday was crisp and calm, with the temp about 30 degrees. I was dressed warm enough, hat, mittens, layered shirts, tights under my shorts. For some reason, I just hated it! Not sure I waited long enough after lunch, could taste that goulash most of the way. My back injury from Friday had just straightened up enough for activity. I only went 2 miles but my body ached all afternoon like I had done the half marathon! I guess it takes a while to get back in to the g...

A Matter of Time

"Transition is a battle, no question about it. You have to decide if the future matters. Because what you do right now, every day -- meals and exercise (or the lack thereof) will determine your future." ---- Tony Horton I saw this quote today and this - "You have to decide if the future matters." - really got to me. That's what it comes down to for every choice I make. DOES the future matter? Will it matter in the future if I smoke a cigarette today? Will it matter if I put toxins in my body like saturated fat and aspartame? Will it matter in the future if I do not exercise? Will my future be effected if I don't maintain an appropriate weight? I was never a future thinker. Nope, not me. Not gonna live past 25, I said, anyway. And I didn't care. In my teens and early 20's I was depressed and full of self loathing. I stood for nothing and blew any which way the wind took me. I tried it all and it all came up short for filling the void....
