Winter Again

We've had an unwelcome return to winter here in Nebraska.  It's been very warm lately with temperatures in the 40's and even 50's with no precipitation to speak of.  So nice to run and ride outdoors!

Monday we woke up to snow and very cold (teens) weather.  Sure makes going to the gym at 5am seem that much crazier!  I have a confession to make:

I've been a bad little triathlete this winter.

I don't mind the pool or even the treadmill, but the indoor bikes are AWFUL.  I can't get comfy on them at all. I've tried more padded shorts, less padding, moving the seat forward and back - but without much more maneuverability than that, I end up feeling like peddling out of the saddle the whole time.  It's so tough to make myself do an hour on that bike - OUCH.

I am a very new swimmer - like before October I couldn't make it down one lane without sputtering - so some extra swim practice is a good thing.  I added this short session before my Wednesday run just for extra time in the water.  Last Saturday I gave up the indoor spin bike for another hour in the pool.  Not sure what all of this will mean to my bike split come July - but at least I know I won't drown in the lake!

On the Intermittent Fasting front - I'm on day 3 of eating during an 8 hour window.  Fortunately,  I've been gone every evening this week, with tonight being the same.  I've always made supper ready by 5:30, so it's not much of a stretch to eat by 5ish, right after my daycare sweeties go home.  The hardest part has been waiting til 9am to eat!  This morning I only made it until 8:45...burned about 600+ calories at the gym and was starving.

Why am I doing this?

Well, there's a whole lot of research about IF and controlling the hormone levels that make a person store fat.  Not sure I believe the whole lot of that - but I will buy that I can make a nicer calorie deficit by resisting after supper snacking.   I also believe in the fasting workout theory that asserts we dip in to fat stores by exercising in a fasting state (8hrs or more after last meal).

So, we shall see.  I'll keep ya posted - at this point I'm committed for a month.  Takes at least that long to see any changes when starting something new.

What new things have you started lately?

  1. I think it's time for a bike trainer so that you can ride at home and skip those awful gym bikes!

I think I would probably pass out if i went for much of a run w/o any calories in the early a.m.!

  2. Brrrr winter is no fun. I'm interested in your fasting. I just watched Forks Over Knives and found it interesting; would like to learn more of the pros/cons of a vegan diet. Not sure I could do it...I really do like dairy. =)
