Sorry

Don't know what the problem was, but I felt pretty sorry for myself today.  I think, possibly, I was just over tired.

We started our Monday off by sleeping in until nearly 7:00!  We all headed to the Y where hubby and I swam, the teen lifted, the pre-teen played a Wii, and the two pre-schoolers played with different toys.

After a good workout, we picked everyone up and swam in a relatively crowded pool for an hour.  Out, shower everyone (SO thankful my husband was there to dress baby boy!), give them a snack, go home, make lunch and put kids down for a nap.

On our way home, we passed by a Chinese restaurant, and I made the mistake of mentioning hearing it's call to me.  I felt really bad when I had to tell everyone it wasn't "in the budget."  I put some steaks on the broiler for lunch and we had it on spinach salads with carrots and broccoli.  Much better for us and it was "in the budget."

Maybe that's why I spent the rest of the day feeling down.  It's a huge responsibility to run a household.  Take one who's finances needed an overhaul and you end up with the additional role of enforcer.  I don't like it, but it has to be done.

In February, I promise to put "Chinese Food" as a line item in the budget.  Then I will get to fill the role of hero.

How often do you eat out?  Is it limited by nutritional concerns, monetary, or both?

  1. We almost never eat out! During tax refund we take all 7 of us out for a nice dinner but that's it! Don't feel guilty! For one the food is crap and two you did a great thing telling your kids that! They have to know we live on budgets that's being responsable!! :)

  2. Glad to know it, Nora. I sometimes feel like we are the only ones...and it's silly to feel badly because it's not DEPRIVING our kids of anything! Thanks for your feedback. :)

  3. I've found that most of the time; processed foods and a lot of restaurant foods don't taste as good as home-made. And I feel rather icky after eating out. Too much sodium/MSG. Too many bad carbs. etc....

Search online or your own cookbooks and have a family activity of making "authentic" Chinese Food some evening. Complete with chopstick lessons. Break up the "work" during the week. Chopping the veggies one day. making the fortune cookies, etc...

The following month, do another ethnic food (Greek? Thai? Eskimo?) and pretty soon, eating out will pale to the fun and togetherness your family is enjoying. *hugs*

  4. Sounds like you are better off for not eating out. I like that you are teaching your kids that you have a budget. They will benefit from this. We eat out way too often when I'm on vacation. Too much!!
